50 Questions to Ask Your Clients Before Every Session
The difference between a good gallery and a gasp-out-loud one usually isn't your lighting or your gear. It's what you knew about your client before they arrived.
After six years and more than a thousand sessions, I've learned that the calmest, most connected shoots all start the same way: with the right questions asked before anyone shows up. Good pre-session questions do three things at once. They make your clients feel deeply cared for, they hand you a shot list full of meaning, and they quietly prevent the little disasters, the nap-time meltdown, the outfit that clashes with their walls, the relative nobody warned you about.
Here are the questions I come back to, organized by category, with a quick note on why each one earns its place. You won't ask all fifty every time. Pull the ones that fit the session in front of you.
Start with the big picture
Before anything logistical, understand why this session is happening.
- What made you book this session right now? Reveals the real driver, a milestone or a fear of time passing, so you can shoot for meaning, not just pretty.
- When you picture the final photos, where do you see them living, a wall, an album, your phone? Tells you how to shoot and what to offer before you pick up a camera.
- Give me three words for the feeling you want these to have. Your north star for mood, posing, and editing.
- Whose idea was this, and is anyone secretly dreading it? Surfaces the reluctant partner or teen early, so you can win them over instead of fighting them on the day.
Understand the people
- Who exactly will be photographed, names, ages, relationships? No surprises on shoot day, and smarter posing and timing.
- Describe each person's personality in a sentence. Lets you direct to who they actually are, the goofball, the shy one, the wiggler.
- Are there relationships you especially want highlighted, siblings, a grandparent and baby? Ensures you capture the connections that matter most.
- Are there family dynamics I should gently navigate, a divorce, a new partner, an estrangement? Avoids awkward moments and posing landmines before they happen.
Nail the wardrobe
Wardrobe is the thing clients quietly panic about most, so make it easy for them.
- Do you have outfits in mind, or would you like guidance? Tells you how much styling help to offer.
- What colors are in the room where these will hang? Wardrobe that complements their home means photos they'll actually print and display.
- Is there anything anyone feels self-conscious about? Lets you pose flatteringly and reassure them, so they relax into it.
Sort out location and timing
- Do you prefer studio, outdoors, or your own home? Matches your plan to their comfort and the look they're imagining.
- What time of day is everyone at their best? Schedule around naps and moods, not just the golden light.
- Is there a location that's meaningful to your family? A meaningful place makes meaningful photos, and an easy, natural upsell.
For the littlest clients
Newborn and baby sessions live and die by timing and preparation.
- How old will baby be on session day? Newborn posing windows are short, so timing changes everything you can offer.
- What's baby's feeding schedule and method? Feeding breaks shape the whole session, so plan for them rather than fight them.
- Any birth or health notes I should hold gently, a NICU stay, reflux, preferences? Lets you handle baby safely and hold space for what the family has been through.
For toddlers and cake smashes
- What does your child love right now, a show, a toy, a snack, a game? The fastest route to a real, belly-laugh smile.
- Are there words or approaches that tend to backfire? Knowing the meltdown triggers is how you avoid them.
- For a cake smash, do you have a theme or color palette in mind? Anchors your entire setup, and it's where the magic happens when you get it right.
- Has your child had cake or sugar before, and how did they react? Sets expectations. Some dive in, some cry, some just stare, and all are photogenic if you're ready.
Make them comfortable
- When was your last professional session, and how did it go? Reveals past disappointment to heal, or high expectations to meet.
- What's your biggest worry about this session? Name the fear and it shrinks. They'll relax the moment you address it.
- How do you feel about being in front of the camera? Especially for the parent who always hides behind it, they deserve to be in the frame too.
Shoot for the story
- Is there an object, tradition, or activity that says "this is us"? Turns a portrait into a story only your family could tell.
- What do you hope your kids feel when they see these in 20 years? Shoot for the future, not just the feed.
And plan for after
- How do you picture using or displaying the final images? Guides your product recommendations toward what they'll genuinely love.
- When do you need the images by, is there a hard deadline? Protects your workflow and their event.
The hard part isn't the questions. It's collecting the answers.
Here's the honest truth: asking great questions is easy. Gathering the answers, without a week of scattered texts, screenshots, and "wait, what did they say about the theme?", is the part that eats your time.
That's exactly why I built Posy. Instead of a chaotic email chain, you send each client one branded link. They tap what they love, their outfits, their location, their must-have shots, and answer your questions, all in one calm place. Everything lands in your dashboard before the session, so you show up already knowing the plan. It works right alongside the CRM you already use.
